The homeware items you should splurge and skimp on
Story by Jackie Brygel
It’s certainly true that our homes say much about our way of life, style and taste.
There’s no doubt, too, that when it comes to options in the tantalising world of interiors, the sky’s the limit. If not, that is, for the one thing that can bring us down to earth with a resounding thud – our budget.
For this reason, it’s reassuring to know that some homeware pieces are well worth the investment – furnishings set to stand the test of time both from a design and durability perspective. Other items, however, can comfortably be bought at a far more economical price level.

A long-time mainstay of home decoration, a nature-inspired palette brings the outdoors in with organic colours and natural textures such as wood, stone and natural fibres.
“It’s a palette that settles and reconnects us to what’s important in life,” says designer Sarah Elshaug. “Surrounding ourselves with nature creates a deep sense of calm in our homes.”

The Block 2019: Interior Designers Share Their Thoughts on the Ensuite Reveals
By Elizabeth Clarke
Perhaps the most private room of the house, the perfect en suite might be small, but should pack a big style statement and be highly functional.
“The en suite is a small bathing zone, so the focus should be on maximising practical storage solutions and functionality,” says designer Sarah Elshaug from Maitland Street Interiors. “It’s about finding balance between a ‘retreat’ vibe with the practicalities of day-to-day living.”

Slice of Heaven
By Lucy Feagins
Chyka and Bruce Keebaugh weren’t looking for a holiday home, when they stumbled across this Mornington Peninsula property online one evening. “I saw it on Instagram … we went to see the house on the Monday, and bought it the following Saturday,” Chyka Keebaugh says. The stunning home wasn’t always this sleek, though. As Keebaugh explains, “before being renovated by the previous owner, it was originally purple and yellow!” Since moving in, the couple have worked together to redecorate and make the place their own.

Architect & Interior Designer Collab On ‘Curved’ House
By Amy Collins Walker
Retaining the existing front curved section of the home, this inner-Melbourne family house underwent a full renovation and extension recently courtesy of a wonderfully synergistic collaboration between an architect and interior designer.
“Our clients were captivated by this unique home when they were looking to move closer to family – with a curved ceiling line and complementary curved wall of floor to ceiling glass it was unlike anything they imagined they would fall in love with! But those curves had so much potential and with clever space planning and the addition of a second storey they were able to realise their dream of creating a unique light-filled, contemporary and elegant four-bedroom family home,” says the home’s interior designer Sarah Elshaug of Maitland Street Interiors who worked on the project alongside architect Vicky Cutler of V Three Architecture.

The Verdict : Lello Pasta Bar
By Stephen Russell
There’s a well-worn Italian proverb that says, ‘Amici e vini sono meglio vecchie’, which basically translates as, ‘Friends, like wine, are best when aged’.
The same could be said for Lello Pasta Bar. Tucked on the corner of Flinders Lane and Russell St, the Italian favourite formerly known as Yak Italian Kitchen & Bar has grown older gracefully (much like adored Italian film star Monica Belluci)...
Lello is full-blown stylish dining. Dramatic portraits and diffused lighting punctuate blue-grey panelled walls. Grey fabric banquette seating attends pale wooden tables...
Paired with perky service, this big-windowed corner spot makes for a fun and flavoursome night out with besties in a setting we’re sure Bellucci would approve of.
